Do You want reduced services?

The City of Elgin plans to reduce your services by placing Engine 6 out of service for an estimated 280 days a year.

Due to a budget cut imposed onto the Elgin Fire Department by the City of Elgin, Engine 6, located at 707 W. Chicago St. will be out of service for an estimated 280 days a year. Last year, Engine 6 responded to over 3,000 Emergency Calls!

The Union and Fire Chief agree that this is a reduction in overall service to the residents of Elgin. Any reduction in staffing to the Elgin Fire Department will lead to reduced services for the residents of Elgin. This is evident in previous budget cuts that resulted in fewer firefighters being on shift daily and less fire apparatus being able to respond on a daily basis.

So what will happen if Engine 6 is out of Service? If you reside, work, or own a business within the downtown or near east side area, you will be directly affected. On an estimated 280 days a year, it will take longer for a Fire Engine to reach your emergency! It’s widely known that a fire can double in size every 30 seconds. Waiting for a Fire Engine to respond from a fire station further away could be detrimental to the effective mitigation of your emergency. If you reside, work, or own a business outside of the immediate area above, you are still affected as it could take longer to get a full response to your location in the event a fire breaks out!

If you live, work, or own a business in Elgin, it is imperative that you contact the Council Members listed below to state your opposition to this reduction in service!
